Owners: Darlington Centre Limited
Date of purchase:
December 2006.
The Cornmill Shopping Centre is located within the
prime retail area of Darlington with two of its four entrances
directly connecting to the newly pedestrianised area of Darlington
Town Centre.
Constructed in 1992 and providing approximately 221,906 sq
ft (20,616 sq m) of covered sales, ancillary and storage accommodation
over two levels, the centre comprises of 50 retail units and
in conception was designed to complement and enhance the towns
existing retail offer and continues to trade successfully
with a wide range of retailers.
The sloping site enabled the development of a two level scheme
with both malls directly accessible from street level. The
malls were designed to generate interest and variety through
changes of direction, variations of width and height with
glazed roof lanterns and top lit double height spaces at the
Prebend Row and Northgate entrances. The atrium is the major
focal point of the shopping centre providing dramatic space
within the scheme. A wall climber lift, escalators and feature
staircase all provide ease of access to the various levels.
The Centre is anchored by the third largest Primark in the
North East of England, New Look, HMV, Dorothy Perkins, W H
Smith and Waterstones and attracted over 6 million visitors
in 2006. Additionally, adjacent to the Shopping Centre there
is a 401-space multi storey Car Park and a 31,000 sq ft TK
Maxx unit which is situated off Crown Street.
