Nigel Gurkin ACA, BSc

Nigel was appointed Financial Director of Plus Shops Ltd in April 2005. He is responsible for the financial propriety and well-being of the company. His role encompasses everything from providing financial information to banks, clients and auditors to
performing daily checks on financial balances and ensuring
the achievement of targets.

After receiving a Degree in Maths at Manchester University in 1985, Nigel then qualified as an accountant with Deloitte Haskins+Sells.

He started his career in property working as a trouble-shooter accountant for Chartwell Land Plc and Hill Samuel Property Management between 1990 and 1992.

In 1992 he joined Speciality Shops Plc as chief accountant. During his time with "Speciality", he helped the business grow financially, providing and vetting financial information for the floatation in 1994 and the merger with Conrad Ritblat in 1997.

In the company that arose out of this merger, Milner Estates Plc, Nigel became Finance Director for the group property subsidiary companies. In the period from 1997 to 1999 Milner grew in size with gross property of assets of over £300m.

In 1999 "Milner" was acquired by Delancey Estates Plc and Nigel left shortly after to help Norwich Union as Finance Manager in the move of the "NU" property division from Norwich to London.

From 2001 to March 2004 Nigel successfully linked up again with Stephen Jaffe and David Houghton to provide accountancy and financial control and secretarial services for Shops etc Ltd.

Before his marriage to Alison in 1992, Nigel did the right thing and uncovered his secret passion! ………Nigel is a fanatic of Sunderland AFC.

Amazingly, Alison still agreed to marry, believing it to be a passing phase (something rarely seen at the Stadium of Light). Unfortunately, she realised the full horror of the situation when she awoke recently to find her two fine young sons and baby daughter dressed completely in red and white stripes.

Tennis, football, cricket and swimming are the other passions he forgot to mention!
