Susan Young
Centre Manager, Cornmill Shopping, Darlington

Susan is responsible for the overall management of the Cornmill Centre which is the prime retail destination in Darlington Town Centre. Supported by a strong on site team including Operations, Administration, Cleaning, Maintenance and Security she has formed excellent relationships with centre tenants and other retailers within Darlington Town Centre.

After completing a Degree in Applied Consumer Studies (Retailing Specialism) and a Postgraduate in Marketing, Susan often jokes that she is quite literally qualified to shop!! She began her career at the centre in 1994 when she completed a 6 week work placement and she’s never quite found the doorway out!!

Then of course she was appointed the position of Centre Manager in March 2005 and she has been involved in a number of projects including the development of the 401 space multi storey car park and 31,000 sq ft TK Maxx units and substantial refurbishment of the Cornmill’s anchor store Primark.

In 2006, Susan introduced ‘The Cornmill Magazine’, a 32 page A4 glossy which was distributed to 50,000 homes in Darlington and the surrounding area. The magazine included news about events which were happening at the centre, fashions tips, competitions and information on the latest gadgets, all of which were available in the centre. The magazine was well received by customers and tenants alike and Susan has two further magazines planned for 2007.

In addition, Susan and her team have overseen the introduction of new RMU’s into the Cornmill and have successfully raised Mall Income Generation by 240% in two years.

Although originally a Geordie, Susan now lives in Darlington and shares her home with her rescue dog Crisp. She is a keen walker and likes nothing better than getting away from it all in Darlington and the Dales.
